I am reading about this and it was a look popular in the late 70's throughout the 80's. A designer created look that has a bit of a stubble which darkens a mans face enough to be called "bad-assed" , young but not old etc.
======================
The term itself originated form the 1930's as an advertisement for Gem razor blades

After a man shaves in the morning, it takes about 8-12 hrs to see the beginnings of a new beard. means that it starts to get visible. around 5PM. I suppose that is the average time it takes.

5 o'clock shadow refers to when 9 to 5 workers would shave before leaving for work and come home at five looking disheveled and stubbly after a long day in the office.

Normal men....only need to shave once a day. They don't begin to look neandrathal at tiffin.

Some men....do develop growth by the afternoon and that is why it is called 5 o'clock shadow!

It is nothing to do with zombies...it is to do with evolution.
