but cant seem to find one that is very explanatory on how to use it and what type of data it needs. I also am confused about the type of data I need and where to get it. I am trying to view the elevation in 3d of my town. Google Earth doesnt provide the depth I need in viewing this data. Any suggestions?

You can do it the low tech way like a lot of geologists do it. Get a topographic map of your town then make a topographic cross section through several sections to get an idea of the 3 dimensional elevation changes.

As for comp programs, go ask in the software section. I had old school teachers who didn't believe in comp programs for geology so i am not familiar with much besides RockWare and Landmark.
