I own a 2003 Focus SE and it has around 88thousand+ miles on it. I get my usual oil changes and maintenance when something goes wrong but what else should I be doing to keep it as long as I can. The transmission is starting to feel a little harder when I run it, but it's still running ok. It just doesn't run like it used to. Any help or tips on what I should do to keep the maintenance up? Thanks for any tips.

Beside driving normal that is all you can do about it. Depending of the car the so the life of the systems. As long as you do your maintenance like you just said. It should last you well over 100,000 miles trouble free. Care is what keeps the vehicles running in good shape.

Expect some wear and tear and that is ok for the use of the vehicle.

The most common problem is the throttle body getting gummed up. The oil and gasoline vapors get recycled through thre PVC valve and breather hose and will stick to the inside of the throttle body on the engine side of the throttle plate. A can of throttle body cleaner and a clean cotton rag will get this sludge out and help the idle and acceleration from a stop.

The second thing would be a basic tune up. I know that half your spark plugs are at least double the gap specifications.

I would recommend a tranny service as well and have the old powersteering fluid sucked out and replaced.

This car has the catalytic convertor mounted directly to the exhaust manifold in front of the engine and this means more heat to the oil pan, transmission, steering rack and engine block verses a car with the cat convertor under the car behind the engine.

I just did all of the above services to my X's 2000 Focus and it had about 60K miles on it and was running a little rough. Smooth as silk now.

Might be time for a cooling system service and thermostat, too.

just follow the maintenance schedule in your owners manual and u will do fine. dont forget those other fluids need changed too like brake fluid, trans fluid, ps fluid. mr. radiator likes fresh stuff too. if u have a timing belt in this car, it will need changed eventually too as will water pump. that is usually around 100k but check your owners man. for more precise mileage. good luck, rob

Replace old wires/cables/inspecte for corrosion/clean

replace all old fluids.
replace battery (get strongest 1)
replace plug, distributor cap, flush cooling
