One answer, from 'cavassi' wrote > 'What other people think of you is never going to be as important as what you think of yourself.' < and in many respects that is true. However, it can take a 'someone' to point out that our behaviour is 'selfish' or 'arrogant' or whatever. Sometimes it takes another to put a brake on us and our behaviour and by offering up that external perspective we might need.
So, it is somewhat difficult if not problematic at times to sort out the chaff from the wheat in some situations.
Sometimes, to realise you've been 'used' is actually Ok because we can identify the boundary just beyond where lies the 'abuse.' And, more to the point, realising that one is worth far more than the person saw you as can be a startling reminded as to not only your worth, but you value too.
However, it does take another, an outsider, to recognise the ''true'' value in each of us.
You can always look upon the situation you have briefly given as ~ 'their loss (of you) is their misfortune and the gain of another.' It might be a little bit possibly cliched, but it's none the less the truth.
Sash.

There are a lot of people who use self-talk to handle what is going inside their minds. When self-talk is not monitored cautiously it can lead to drastic effects not only on one’s personality but also affects its mentality and psychology. Self-talk is a type of conversation which we conduct with ourselves. In literature we call it soliloquy. Brain’s reticular activating system never forgets what we repeat again and again. Ironically this system can not recognize what is beneficial to the individual and what is not. Think you can, think you can't; either way, you'll be right- a saying goes like this. Therefore when ever we ‘talk’ with ourselves, we should be cautious, very cautious in fact. There are a lot of audio programs which can help and there are a lot of online books. If I recall there is a book ‘self-talk solutions’ which is every effective in this scenario.

What other people think of you is never going to be as important as what you think of yourself. In some situations I would rather people think I was a wimp than be dead. People may take advantage of us our entire lives, but they really don't steal from me, they fool themselves because they think they are "something" when all they are is what they can take from others and be destructive, not what they can give and be constructive.

Oh YES indeed......and doesn't it hurt ?!?
But luckily we are all FREE SPIRITS, and we really do not have to put up with that.
Its up to you - you can make it different, its not easy, but is not impossible either - good luck x.
