Well yeah, but Magician, where do these people get such absurd notions? They're not really based on anything at all.

A wide variety of courses are offered to teach students about a wide variety of things. No matter the curriculum, classes like that are higher-level classes meant to promote critical thinking and writing.

These are valid courses of study for people who conduct research on such matters. There is no subject that can be studied that shouldn't be studied by someone.

Where there is confusion is that some people aren't suited for academic study of a subject - they're suited to vocational study. By this I mean that some people need to learn how to do a job and they don't need anything other than the information to do that job. These folks aren't interested in, nor will they benefit from, the academic study of any subject area in specialized detail and that's great - we need people who know how to keep the company books but aren't at all interested in why poverty happens in some places but not others. We also need people who are interested in the most miniscule details of the most obscure subject - that's how we improve society and find answers to questions we haven't even thought of yet.

Let's look at one of your examples for a second and see the applicability to the real world. Disability studies: if we both agree that there are indeed disabled people in the world; then there must also be professionals out there who provide services to those disabled people. Let's say you wanted to become a rehabilitation counselor - the person who helps people get their life back together after they have both legs amputated in a car accident. Wouldn't it be good to have studied something about people with disabilities, how they react and adapt, what the best methods to recovery are? Surely that would be good for this professional. Maybe the idea isn't so absurd then? If I were needing a rehabilitation counselor, I'd like for him/her to have had a class or two on the subject.

Of course, if you don't care about such things as disability studies; don't study it. But some people do care and that's why we have "such absurd ideas" for classes - what I sometimes wonder is why some people have the absurd idea that there is any topic not worthy of study by someone.

just a thought or two, for what it's worth. I've never experienced a college class that made me "more retarded" or one that taught me anything that was of no use in the "real world" -- the real world is a big place and you never know when you'll need to know about some obscure subject. With nearly 200 semester hours undergraduate and 40 graduate - I've taken more than a few classes. Some were in these obscure subjects and some were more interesting than others.

If you don't understand the need to study such material (and truly believe the material isn't valid) then you aren't suited for university level study - you should consider a tech college or a job (but not one in disability services since you think their field is "absurd").

Some people want to study that kind of thing. If you don't want to take it, don't.
