That's very early labour, and too soon to go to the hospital.

You should follow your hospital's advice on this one; they'll probably give you guidelines.

I would personally recommend not heading out until they're around 10 minutes apart, or you're finding the pain very difficult to manage.

I had my baby at home, in a planned homebirth, so I didn't need to worry too much about this! I called my midwife when my contractions were about 3 minutes apart, and getting difficult to endure.

The problem with going to hospital too early is that you could be there for many, many hours. Also, some women find that the travel to hospital, and the stress of being in hospital and now on a hospital time schedule to produce a baby, can slow their labour. So it's best to wait to go until you're in "established" labour.

Make sure you get plenty of rest in this early labour stage. When my contractions were varying from 1 hour to 20 mins apart, I went back to bed and napped. This is absolutely the best thing to do in early labour, IMO. You're going to need all your energy soon!

My hospital is an hour and a half away... obviously I won't be heading there if I'm having one contraction every hour... but how close should they be for the distance I have to drive? Maybe 20-30 minutes apart?

My started at 1 am coming every 10 - 15 mins, but 3 am they were coming every 7 mins.. Few hours later 5 mins apart. By 9am 2 -3 mins. Best is she times them & writes how painful they are.. If coming every 5 mins or under lasting 35-45secs she could be going into labour. Because her hospital is far away, Best is she goes in and they monitor her by the machine. She may be more dilated since yesterday. Very possible God bless x

If you have one contraction an hour and go to the hospital, they will send you home. You're probably in very, very early labour.

Take a walk, take a shower, get some rest. You're going to need the energy later on.

Once your contractions get closer together (like 5 or so mins apart, lasting 30 seconds, not an hour apart), go in.

However, if your contractions are still very widely spaced apart and your water breaks...be ready to go in that day. Once your water breaks, you are at risk of infection. Go in within the 24 hour period after your water breaks even if contractions don't increase in frequency.

Well really it depends on how far you live away from the hospital, and how long it will take you to get there. Most likely you will need to head in when the contractions are 5 min. apart. If your water breaks you need to head in immediately. But I would say call your doctor and find out when they think you should head it because they know your situation a whole lot better than I do.

Ignore Miley Cyrus and miraclebaby_2006 they are both wrong.

Walking helped me to progress and I made sure to rest when I needed to. It is important to stay hydrated and if you can try to eat small meals. When the contractions are 5 minutes apart and lasting 45-60 seconds is generally when to go into the hospital. You should call Labor & Delivery or your Doctor and they will give you specific guidelines. Good Luck!

It should be the regular contraction which it should increase its intensity and frequency gradually.
Otherwise a show or leaking liquor is another factor support you to go to hospital.
Uncommonly, without prior contraction pain, you start of with an intense and very frequent pain ,lets say 1 in 2 minutes. If that happen hurry to hospital you may deliver soon.
Otherwise the contraction which is irregular and on and off shouldnt worry you.

Be patient, good luck and all will go great!!! Way too far apart, I called my MD when they were 15 min apart and she said "call me again when they're 5 min apart". Mine started at 1PM the afternoon before I gave birth. Started out mild and 1 hr. apart and as the afternoon progressed, 1/2 hour apart and sharper, 15 min apart, called my husband, by 6 about 10 mn apart and sharper, 7:00 5 mn apart, went to hospital and was 6" dilated, now in a lot of pain and decided on epidural, went up to deliver room around 8:30 waited for epidural pain worse and closer, got that about 9:45 phew,,, felt much, much better, she broke my water, midnight still 6" dilated contractions slowing down, gave me inducing drug(pitocin)name) she came back at 2AM, I was 10 centimeters, pushed, pushed, pushed(very tiring but no pain) finally gave birth at 4:56AM. almost had a cesaerain as her head was big for me. Worth every pain, she was beautiful. Certainly call MD if your concerned, that's what they get paid the big bucks for. God bless, keep calm.

I think you should call the hospital and get a nurse to advise you on when you should go. Usually one needs to get to the hospital when the contractions are coming very quickly but don't take the advice of an unprofessional because every pregnancy is different.
