If you know how an element behaves and what it looks like does that tell you anything about how a compound containing that element looks or behaves?

Not at all. Sodium is an extrememly flammable and reactive metal...reacting violently with water. Chlorine is a poisonous gas. Together as a compound, they make table salt which is yummy, not poisonous, and dissolves nicely in water.

Look at hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. Their properties have no resemblance to water, which is a compound made from hydrogen and oxygen
