History is written by the winners. The US has defeated many enemies from the Native Americans, to Nazi Germany to Saddam's evil regime. But because we won, we will never know the other side of those battles. History will be white washed and will be made to seem like the US was heroic and that we always did the right things. The US was one of the first countries to ever use germ warfare, such as when we gave the Native Americans blankets infected with smallpox, etc. so we could continue with our Manifest Destiny. And those that control that past are able to shape the future. If we believe this country was our enemy or did this or that to us, then we can justify attacking them. It's really all very Orwellian in nature. If you haven't read it, read "1984" by George Orwell and you'll see how the government would edit history to suit their needs. The people who control the past now, and therefore control the future are the huge conglomerates who own all the forms of media. If you're a huge company who owns a pharmaceutical company AND a news network and your new drug happens to kill people, you're certainly not going to report it on your own network and you'll do your best to erase that from the past. And then of course, there's the government. George W. Bush so conveniently forgot that Saddam Hussein was given weapons by the US to help him fight the Kurds. Yet, we accused him of using chemical weapons against his own people. I'd read before he was executed that he could use a defense such as "well, you gave me those weapons, did you think I would not use them?" Osama Bin Laden was also a former "ally," and I use the term loosely, of the US. We gave him and the rest of Afghanistan weapons to help defeat the Soviets. Don't get me wrong, I think the US is a great country. Have we always done the right things throughout history just for the sake of doing the right thing or have we only done them when they served our purposes? I think it's a little bit of both. In closing, the quote "who controls the past now, controls the future. Who controls the present now, controls the past." by Rage Against the Machine seems to hold true.

If somebody could control the past.. they'd have control over the future. However, without a time machine, it's impossible to control the past.. and nobody has one of them yet.

PRESENT
PAST
FUTURE
AS I AM WRITING TO YOU NOW I AM IN THE PRESENT
SENDING IT MAKES IT THE FUTURE
BY THE TIME YOU READ IT IT IS PAST
IS THAT SIMPLE ENOUGH SO I HAVE EQUALITIZED YOUR RATIONAL OF THE QUESTION?
EASILY PUT:
IF YOU ASK FOR THE TIME THAT IS PRESENT
I GIVE YOU THE TIME AS FUTURE AND WHEN WE ARE DONE IT IS ALL A PAST TIME.
