The doorframe to my bedroom has been busted for some time and I would like to repair it so I can lock my door. Do I need to replace the whole thing or can I just do the side where the lock was forced?

You can get a wide-bladed Spackle knife and start prying off the trim on the busted side (wide bladed will avoid gouging the nearby plaster). After you take off that trim you will see the wood that is underneath it and that needs the repairs. You will typically see two 2x4 pieces of wood nailed together with a finished piece of 1" thick wood trim as the top layer. Look and see if the damage goes deeper than the top trim. If not just pry off the trim and get a replacement piece that you can cut to length. If the top 2x4 is broken you would need a replacement for that too. That will be harder to remove and might need a pry bar to loosen it and pull out its nails. If you replace it nail it in securely and put a bunch of long screws in the vicinity of the lock to hold it tightly there.

Put all the trim back into place and nail it with finishing nails. Sink their heads with a nail set and smear some premixed Spackle over the place where the heads are sunk in. Smear Spackle neatly over any other plaster dents or breaks. Touch up the paint if needed.

Swing the door shut and use a pencil to mark where its locking latch contacts the trim. Now take the old strike plate (or a new one if the old one was broken) and tape it on the door to try out its final position. Mark the position and cut around its edges and use a chisel to make a depression the plate can go into . Put in its screws and check that the door opens and closes and locks OK.
