Given a function, say y = 2x, x is the input, y is the output.

Make a list of possible x values, and their corresponding y values:

x, y:
0, 0
1, 2
2, 4
3, 6

... and so on.

Math Input And Output

The problem will normally give you a function that is to be used on all the inputs. Then, you just put the input into the function, and the end result is your output. If they give you the input and output, and want you to come up with the function they are using, that is mainly just guess and check and make sure it works with every single input and output.
