I know several small bands who personally pursue and book their own gigs.
Go for it - pretty soon the word will get out and you won't have to work so hard to get bookings.
I think the only reason bands hire booking agents is so they don't have to bother with the work and effort to get the bookings.

blessings :)

Ramjet is right. Many bands start out getting their own gigs. It might be one of them or their significant others, but someone will probably be more comfortable "selling" them to a local venue. I would have loved that job back in the day!

small gigs they can book them on their own as far as i know. an agency just helps find you gigs/ect. and if you're a known band then they sort everything out.

that's just from my understanding, so do a bit of research. good luck!
