I hate rats myself not to mention being scared to death of them. I can't even stand to see a picture or I get really grossed out if I see the in a movie. The problem is that if you have one, there is probably more that you don't see because the breed like every 15 minutes or so. Sounds like you had the problem ad your cat was killing them? While you don't have a cat to worry about, I'd consider the poison because they eat if and will carry it back to where ever they are living thus killing more. If the problem continues I'd consider moving.

Rats are very clever, they become wary of traps and poison. and they very rarely infest the average home , but may get into out houses and sheds. But if they are in your home you have a big problem, in which you alone can not solve . I suggest you call your Local Council, and they will send the Environmental Health Department, They will rid this problem for you. Rats breed very quickly 1 female rat can produce as many as 50 young in a year, They carry diseases, cause a lot of damage to your home & can even cause a fire by chewing through the electric cabels. I have seen a rat eat it´s own foot off just to escape. Get the professionals in to deal with this

Why not get another cat? You had one before, I am sure you'd love to have that company only a cat can give again. Plus she'll scare the rats off. No more rats!

Not really any way to get rid of them without pest control. Call your local council and environmental service and they will come along and baitbox the area.
