Subject: Coat

Verb: Was

Expensive is an adjective.

A good way to test things:

A sentence doesn't make sense if it doesn't have the subject/predicate. So to make sure your answer is right take out the subject/predicate and see if the sentence still makes sense.

Without the subject(coat): The expensive, new was well beyond my means.

This makes no sense because the new what??

Without the verb: The expensive, new, coat well beyond my means.

This also makes no sense.
You can tell that expensive is NOT the verb because the sentence makes sense without it.

The new coat was well beyond my means.

The word expensive IMPROVES it but does not COMPLETE it.

Good Luck!
