2 litres = 2000 ml
¼ of 2 litres = ¼ x 2000 ml = 500 ml

milli- means one thousandth, so 1 L = 1000 ml and 2 L = 2000 ml. Now divide by 4 giving you 500 ml.

1/4 x 2 = 1/2, so you start out with half a liter, or 0.5 liters. One liter = 1000 milliliters, so 0.5 x 1000 = 500 milliliters.
