Something that is "impending" IS going to happen, and soon.

Something that is "potential" MAY happen.

Impending means that something is about to happen. Potential means that something is possible to happen.

Impending means that something is going to happen. Like "impending doom" or "impending trial."

Potential means that something could happen.
Like "there is the potential for rain."

impending means like something is waiting to happen...

Potential means something has the ability to do something but it doesnt ever have to..

IMPENDING MEANS SOON TO HAPPEN WITH THE IMPLICATION OF SOMETHING HANGING OVER SOMEONE. POTENTIAL MEANS THE POSSIBILITY IS THERE ALL THINGS NECESSARY TO MAKE IT HAPPEN ARE IN PLACE BUT IT DOESN'T APPEAR IMMINENT.

impending is something that is defenetly going to happen and you cant stop it but potential is something that might happen but it might not
