Sometimes you can use shadows. Frank Miller, when he drew his Sin City comic book, did this a lot, in just black and white. There are full pages of nothing but shadows which make the forms.

Background shapes and shadows help define the form without actually drawing a solid line around the whole thing. If you have the opportunity to use color you should find it a lot easier, but it can be done even in black and white.

There are so many ways of answering this:
Remember contour lines are lines that DO not break. They keep going to form the shape you are wanting.
Try sketching. The lines don't connect, but may overlap.
It also depends on what you are trying to draw.. Portraits? Landscapes? Still-lifes? Each one has it's unique style of drawing.
No matter which style you are using, make sure you pay close attention to the lights/shadows. That is very important.
For example if you are drawing buildings - use a ruler and make sure that you know your vanishing points (1 point or 2 point perspective).

Try reducing whatever you are drawing to basic shapes and then connecting those shapes. Finish by checking the line edge of surfaces and toning in the completed form.
