If it's completely black, try hooking up an external monitor - most laptops have a connector that will let you do this. If it's still black on the external monitor, the video system in your laptop is blown and you should probably consider buying a new one rather than trying to get it fixed or replaced.

If it's just dim, check the online help and see if there's a way to adjust the brightness. If that's not the problem, your screen may need replacing. That would be too expensive to be worthwhile on most machines. Again, try an external monitor - if that works, you can at least use the laptop until you save up the money for a new one.

Laptops rely on an illuminator lamp to display brightly. You will need to take it to a repair shop, as replacing the illuminator can be tricky. This is probably all the problem is.

on my laptop I use hold down the Fn button (light blue) and the up arrow button until its a light as I like. Hope that helps.

Sounds like the backilighting is gone - not overly expensive or difficult to replace.
