Who gives the rabies shots(veterinarian or veterinarian technician)?? I would like to be able to give all my animals their shots myself(the basic shots like rabies,distemper,ect,..) but i want to know how i would be able to do this?? What kind of license, and education would i need? I was thinking that a Veterinary Technician could give the shots, so is that right and would that work, and how??

Thanks

Im not asking this to give my current 4 animals their shots myself. Im asking because i would like to when i get settled, get a nice chunk of property and adopt animals. Kind of like an animal farm, especially for all those animals that cant get good homes. Im interested in Veterinary anyways so going through any kind of schooling wouldnt be just for the shots, but i thought it would be nice if i could so it would help me save a couple thousand dollars every now and then when theyre needed for all the animals i would like to have. But i wouldnt do anything i thought i couldnt do anyways even if i means paying out all the money instead.

you can get the distemper/parvo shots at a feed store, or order them thru Drs Foster and Smith.

Rabies must be done by a vet or vet tech. You cannot give rabies vaccines yourself. There are clinics available tho, which cost $5-15 to get your pets their rabies vaccines.

If you are going to get into rescue, you should check into getting a 501c, some vets will offer discounts to non profit rescue organizations.

I hear that in America you can get hold of vaccines from feed stores, and that some breeders do it themselves, but that is ludicrous.

Vaccines are controlled drugs that should only be administered to an animal that is certified to be healthy - this is something only a professional can certify.

So the answer to your question would be you would require a veterinary education and a veterinarian's license. I'm a qualified vet nurse (equivalent of a vet tech in America), and even we're not allowed to give even booster vaccinations - because they require a vet's certification of health.

When you have all your land and animals and everything, just take them to a vet to be properly vaccinated. That's what you pay for this service for: so you know you're getting the proper drugs that have been stored correctly, and veterinary assurance that your animal is healthy at the time. Yearly boosters also allow your animals to get their yearly check ups, which is preferable to only going once the animal is sick.

Right now, in the States, only a Veterinarian or his trained, authorized assistant can give a rabies shot. It is entered in a ledger, required by law, that such and such a dog owned by so and so received a rabies shot on such a date. That person will receive a little metal tag for the dog, and a paper certifying that the shot was given.

You may be able to obtain rabies injection material from some other source, but if your dog bites somebody you can't say "Oh, I gave my dog the shot myself" because it will not be recognised...... for obvious reasons. The only shots recognised are those given by some authorized person at a Vet's office, properly recorded, and the certificate of vaccination duly issued.

No, a vet gives actual vaccines. You would have to go all the way through vet school, and since rabies vaccines are closely controlled, so you would have to actually be working in a vet office in order to obtain them. Seems kind of silly when you can just go to animal control and pay a few bucks to have their rabies done, and unless you're breeding puppies, you shouldn't need the other vaccines anyway- dogs are overvaccinated these days, they don't need distemper or all those other vaccines after their puppy series is complete.

EDIT: Just so you know, I doubt that even with years and years of owning your 'sanctuary' will you save ANY money doing that stuff yourself, not if you count the years of schooling you'll have to pay for first- why would you pay 50-100 thousand dollars on schooling to save a few hundred a year in vet bills?

In the US, it is legal for a veterinarian only to give rabies shots. Techs are allowed to give all other shots (only by doctors order), but not rabies.
