I have a 1992 Subaru Legacy and I am trying to replace the timming belt myself. I have removed everything but I am stuck in removing the crankshaft pulley. Can anyone please give me some advise on how to remove it since it keeps rotating everytime I try to unlock the nut in the middle of the crankshaft pulley.if there are cheap tools, where can I get it and what is the name of the tool that I should use/buy. Thanks, I preciate your input.

If it's an auto tranny, the impact wrench is the only way to go besides removing the starter and holding the flywheel there with a bar. If it's a manual tranny, have someone put it in 1st gear and hold the brakes on while you try to loosen the bolt>

I have never done a subaru, but in a small block chevy there are holes that I pass a bolt or a bar through. When the pulley or the damper rotates, the bolt or bar will wedge against something solid and keep it from rotating so I can loosen the bolts. The pulley comes off easy without the bolts, the damper has to be pulled off with a harmonic damper puller. Not too expensive, or can be rented. Good luck.

Here's a trick I've used a few times when I was stuck without my air tools. Put a socket wrench on the bolt using a breaker bar (with an extension pipe if needed) and use the starter motor to whack the bar against the ground. Also make sure you have a non-interference engine before trying this. Good luck.

Most people use an impact gun, you can rent an electric one at most rental shops. No other easy way to do this
