Out of 300 students taking Math,140 is taking both Science and Math. Therefore the no of students taking only Math
=300-140=160
Similarly,Out of 250 students taking Science,140 students are taking both Math and Science
Therefore,no of students taking only science
=250-140=110
Therefore total no of students taking Math,Science and both the subjects
=160+110+140
=410
The no of students not taking any of the above subjets is
450-410
=40

Make a Venn Diagram

Math 300 - 140 = 160 (just math)

Science 250 - 140 = 110 (just science)

just math + just science + both =
160 + 110 + 140 = 410

We have 450 students but it only adds up to 410 so...

450 - 410 = 40 students who take neither

40 students are not taking any and are being LAZY.

Knowns:
You have 450 students.
300 Taking Math
250 Taking Science

140 are taking both.

So the number of students not taking both is:
300-140 for math = 160
250-140 for science = 110
So in total 270 only taking one test.
Then add in those people taking both, 140, and you get 410.

450-410 is 40.

So those taking two tests are being double counted...

10, ok, my wife is unsure of this.... but this is my thinking, 140 taking both ok? add 140 to 300 taking math, been the largest number, that adds up to 440, with 10 left.
