Thats hard, seeing that you have such a broad topic range. If you can provide some more detail on your subject, I can try and help. Remember, a thisis is there as an outline for you topic points, you want to express what you are going to inform them about in that statement.

Heres a simple one based on limited knowlage of subject:

While there are many populer myths and legends in the world of pirates, there is a real factual history of this seafearing culture. Looking at there history, famos fugures, and developement into the modern age, we can have a better understanding of the real world of pirates.

I would recommend narrowing down your subject and then developing a thesis. If you chose something like the evolution of pirates from the earliest recorded history to the modern day "pirates" then you could simply add a simple fact to your sentence and then you would have a thesis. Do some research and the the thesis will come a lot easier.

suggestion:
The concept of Pirates throughout the old world has left a lasting impression on our society, the fame and notoriety that comes with the pirate life is shown through pirates that have become famous as a result of their actions, another idea to consider is that pirates varied in type and form, and surprisingly enough pirates are actually still prevalent through our modern society.

Piracy has never been more prevalent than it is today; we just don't call it that any more. There used to be Captain Kidd, Blackbeard and a score of others, now there's Carl Icon, Donald Trump, and the famous industrial pirate empire of J. P. Morgan.

Being a Pirate wasn't all its cracked up to be.

Then outline how miserable Priates were: prison, hangings, scurvy, loosing limbs, parrot poop on their sholders all the time...that sort of thing.
