Its not brain surgery. If you are pretty close preferably on the more side for oil you will be ok. If your unit smokes a whole bunch then cut down on the oil a bit. To much oil will foul your spark plug sooner but that's not a big deal just take it out and clean it. Also it keeps your unit well lubed and also acts as a coolant as well.

Very important, too little and you seize the motor too much and you get carbon buildups that eventually either plug the exhaust port or buildup in the exhaust port which eventually breaks off and falls into the combustion chamber and trashes the engine.
Then there is the plugging of the spark arrestor which will cut power and make the engine run much quieter (plugs exhaust).
Bottom line, use only oil recommended by the manufacturer in the quantities they recommend because carbon is not your friend with a small 2 cycle engine.

It is vital to the life of the engine. Mixing too little oil with the gas will cause heat and friction. Too much oil will cause a lean combustion condition which causes heat. Adding more oil than required is not a good idea. If you don't know the right mixture, don't guess at it. Just adding more oil is not the answer. Find out the right mixture for your machine.

The ratio of oil-to-gasoline given for any particular two-cycle engine is a parameter of operation which has been determined to be optimum for that particular engine. The oil is required for lubrication of the moving parts; too little will result in undue wear, and too much will result in poor combustion, less power, and deposits which will, over time, deliver poor performance. Of course the manufacturer will have, through research, determined a tolerance level, so that there may be very little difference in operating efficiency between ratios of, say 1:19 and 1:21 for an optimum ratio of 1:20, but it is still going to be highly desirable for operators of devices with two-cycle engines to come as close as they can to the optimum ratio of oil-to-gasoline.

If your mix is too thin then you run the risk of engine seizup or failure. If your mixture is too thick then the carb will gum up and the plug will foul out turn black and not hit at all.not to mention it will smoke like heck. you want a 40 to 1 ratio around 2 ounces per gallon.

Like suggested- a bit more oil is preferrable over less oil - its how the weedwacker gets lubricated- if youre stingy on the oil it can seize up - over do it on the oil and itll foul the spark plug .

its very important ,
if you dont, it wont run right ,and will burn out ,in time
use a gallon tank, and the oil mixed up, the oil comes preset , just add a gallon of gas, and shake well,

if you don't want the motor to die its important. without the right amount of oil the motor will die(and you will need to buy another one) too much oil will cause a lack of performance and air pollution
