If you have a good imagination I would say read edgar allen poe, I like him and stephen king. To me poe was the grandfather of the modern horror stories. Some of dean r koontz's stuff is pretty cool also. Also if you like certain types of horror stories about vampires and werewolfs and such the internet has sites you can read about whatever you want to, especially now that halloween is fast approaching.

HP Lovecraft was the king of the macabre story. An incredible writer also. He is not an obscure writer either, so you can pick him up from most any bookstore.

Ann Rice or Stephan Kings books are great to read.

it's best to make up your own, or to embellish traditional ones and make them your own.
THen you can tell them with more feeling and ownership.
