Sounds like you’re in Overtype Mode. There's a one-time fix and a permanent fix. For the one-time fix, press the Insert key once.

But if this happens every time you open a document, your Options are probably set to start in Overtype mode. Here's how you can fix that permanently:

1. Click on the Tools->Options menu item.
2. Click on the Edit page.
3. Under Editing Options, make sure the Overtype Mode checkbox is clear.
4. Click OK.

That should do it.

It appears that you need to hit the insert key. Right now you are in "type over" mode. Hitting the insert key will cause the keyboard to insert symbols where the cursor is rather than writing over what is there.

Look bottom right corner of Word. Do you see the letters INS? If so just hit the INSERT key and it will disappear.

Press the button insert on your keyboard. It's on the left side of the enter button.
