best to whip stitch the strings of beads on by hand. That way it is done to best advantage. It can be done with a machine but I didn't like the final effect.

I have also strung the beads I wanted on a dress and sewed them individually on. It all depends on the final effect you have in mind.

Use very good quality thread for applying beads to dresses. If the fabric is going to get a lot of beads in one area, or if the fabric is very delicate, you may need to apply a stabilizing fabric on the the wrong side of the material to back it. I reccomend silk organza as a really good all-purpose backing , but you can also use fusible interfacings out of other stuff too.
You can stitch beads on singly, or with a sequin, or all in a line on a thread, with a second thread to secure them to the fabric. Sometimes I stick them down with a dot of fabric glue(very very small dot) to keep them exactly where I want them before sewing them down permanently.

Sew on some very glitzy beads and you will look great. Also I know you wanted to add beads but, have you ever heard of the gemagic? If so you can add awesome gems and diamonds that are fake but look so real. I hope you have fun.

Here is a good book. In Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile we wear lots of beaded gowns, and there are an infinite number of designs you can do, but it's good to know the basic stitches so your beads will look good and stay on.
