I would stick with Windows XP until Service Pack 1 comes out for Vista, but you might find it hard to find a laptop with XP.

HAHA what a question, first off, Vista is **** (along with microsoft itself) the programmers ran out of time and Microsoft didnt want to push back the release date so they used old Windows 95 coding (if you dont know how buggy 95 was then you should know now that i told you). if thats not enough of a reason for you to not buy windows vista then i have a few more reasons up my sleeve
If you plan on using Blu-Ray discs in the near future Vista doesnt even trust your monitor to display the content. lets say you have a DVD player hooked up through a VCR and you play a DVD the screen's brightness changes horribly durring the movie this is called copyright protection well Vista wont even display the images on the monitor if you play blu-ray discs
and if you have any problems with Vista and need to reinstall it, your Serial number is only good for 2 or 3 times before it wont let you use it any more (this means it wont let you reinstall YOUR software more than 2 or 3 times on YOUR computer)
if you HAVE to use Windows: use windows XP. now adays they dont sell new computers with XP so your best bet is to get the computer and get the Windows XP system and install it on the computer, trust me it will be worth the extra bucks to get a more stable system

Until all most problems are worked out with Vista, your money would be better spent getting XP. You will see a most different operating system than 98. IF your just upgrading just the operating system, be aware that XP and Vista use lots of ram, and if your present computer can not handle addition ram your in trouble. If your getting a new system buy as much ram as you can afford, normally 1 gig for XP and twice that for Vista as a minimum

hi kenneth
moving from windows 98 directley to windows vista would be too much at once,i would think you would be better off trying windows xp first,it was designed for people who were using windows 98 and most 98 users bought the xp upgrade and changed over that way
also you need to take into account for the hardware issues, can a p.c currently using windows 98 manage to run windows vista?
to find out go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx and download the vista upgrade advisor, this will scan your current p.c to see if it can run vista
i know you are thinking of buying a new laptop however if your current p.c can run vista then at least you can have that as another option
vista has had a few teething problems however i have vista premium and also xp home and the amount of errors and problems on each p.c is around the same
vista does have more problems when running certain games, its not the best operating system for playing games
your best bet is to go for the windows xp media center edition, this is like windows xp home but with the media center included, its ideal for the multimedia age and is compatible with todays usb digital tv sticks
if you decide to go for vista tough go for vista premium, its got everything you need and is well priced
any problems let me know
good luck kenneth!

I have two computers, one with XP (SP2), and one with Vista Home Premium. Your friends are right, Vista has quite a few compatability issues at first if you go from XP to Vista. But if you buy a computer with Vista right off, it's a pretty safe bet; Vista can't do much more than XP, it just looks cool.
XP is pretty standard, & you can do alot on it. For now, I'd stick with XP. I'm not saying which one you should buy, just providing some facts.
Good luck!

S**ew Microsoft! Use XP!!
Seriously, you will have a learning curve if you go with XP or Vista.
Most, if not all of your software may not be compatible with Vista, whereas with XP, you have a better chance of that.
Also, if you have a printer or other peripheral plugged into your computer, you may want to check and see if it can be used with Vista. That is, that there are drivers included with Vista or available from the hardware manufacturer.

whenever there is a new version everyone will say that there are some failures but in the no time those will be fixed. when p4 was released it is also the same case ...see the look and feel of vista how crisp it is ..and now also every computer dealer is giving visha home once u purchase a laptop/desktop...u better prefer vista it is better as it has some enhanced security compared to XP.

I had the same decision myself, ended up going for XP as allegedly Vista has a lot of loopholes, as well as Microsoft conning all the companies in to paying them to test their software on Vista.

XP professional will give you more than you need, but i would go for WINDOWS MEDIA CENTRE 2005,.This program consists of XP PRO,.,. and EP7,to name a few,it will give you all you could possibly need. But this program needs a beefed up pc,which is why it is normally preprogrammed by the manufacturer,Acer pcs are very good. The service pack 1 is not yet available for vista.
