Free antivirus programs do not equal good protection.
To keep your computer protected (I am assuming that you're using a PC), you have several options to choose from:
1) purchase an antivirus program (for a yearly subscription fee) either by going to a store or downloading one, or,
2) drop your broadband access with Virgin and go with a provider that offers free antivirus protection. You have to pay for broadband anyway, and,
3) just keep removing viruses/adware/spyware manually from your hard disk (provided you know what you're doing), and, finally,
4) don't surf on sites that you don't trust.
Whatever you pick, you're still not protected 100%. Even with internet security installed on my computer, I still end up going in and removing suspicious programs anyway, and dumping "listening" cookies out of my cache daily.
To get your computer running up to speed again, and before you install new virus software, go into add/remove programs and get rid of any software that is used "rarely" that you don't need or want anymore, give your computer a clean sweep (you can buy software that does this, like Norton's Systemworks), create a back-up disk, and then install your new antivirus program.
**No need to reformat your hard drive...that is a misconception.**
My antivirus program of choice, Trend Micro.
Cheers and Good Luck!

weilongli2003 is right... You're not going to get a good antivirus for free. Some people recommend AVG but I've tried it and to be perfectly honest it was awful.
You should look into products from Zone Alarm and Norton Antivius but personally I would recommend Windows Live Onecare. You can get a 90 free trial at the link below and If you like it you can subscribe.
Hope this helps you

I’ll suggest you to remove that antivirus and install a new version of Norton antivirus, update it. The latest version of Norton antivirus is free for 20 days. It expires and needs to be purchased after its trial period ends. However you can have the old version, maybe released in 2006 or 2005 but it’s for free. You can have it on www.geo.net.pk in the downloads directory. Update it and get your PC secured for free.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

AVG Anti-Virus is crap!
Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
In test,

etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.
AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG. = Average, at best!
There are much better free anti-virus alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:

Enjoy!
