I wonder how having 2 moons would affect the tides.

You have asked this question one month too late! It's too bad this question wasn't offered at this time last month, when this Yahoo topic was peppered with questions about the "Two Moons" internet hoax.

In a way, the answer to the tides question is already with us. The sun, don't forget, also generates tides, kind of like a second moon. When the moon and sun are in a line, higher-than-normal tides occur, known as spring tides. When the two bodies are quartered, we have neap tides, with a lower amplitude than usual.

That would be cool to see. As far as the tides.....I don't know I suppose two Moons the size of ours would mean no low tides at all? Now you got me thinking about this. I suppose it would have to depend on whether or not the two moons were on each side of the planet each in geosynchronous type of orbit like the one we've got. Either way the effect two moons would have on th Earth would be vastly different from just the one. If they're mass were not the same or the distances were different it could tear the Earth apart causing Earthquakes, tsunamis, and extreme climate shifts.

If the moons are always on the same side, then the tides would be stronger. If one moon is on the other side, the gravities of the two bodies would oppose each other, weakening the tides.

Eric: Our moon is not in geosynchronous orbit. That would be cool though, but there would be no tides.

Mars has two moons, and look what that got her. Barren, desolate, toxic atmosphere, red sky, no life, no seas, no seasons, no trees.

It would be way cool if we had two moons, and suddenly the collided together and completely destroyed eachother ! That would be the most spectacular sight ever! Then we'd have millions of moons !!!

Screw the tides. With 2 moons to hook up under, you might get laid twice as often ☺
