Iraqis tell Washington to monitor its own progress
15 Sep 2007 11:46:56 GMT
Iraq in turmoil
BAGHDAD, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Iraqi lawmakers said on Saturday Washington was covering up for its own mistakes in Iraq by setting them artificial benchmarks to meet and then ticking them off like scorecards.

Frustrated by criticism from the U.S over their slow progress towards political goals meant to foster national reconciliation, Iraqi leaders said Washington would be better served by dxamining its own progress in the unpopular war.

"The Americans always try to pretend the responsibility for cleaning up this mess isn't theirs and tend to shift blame onto Iraq, Iran and Syria for everything that goes wrong," said veteran Kurdish lawmaker Mahmoud Othman.
"But they should stop this nonsense and admit that most of the accountability rests on their shoulders," he told Reuters.

I so agree.
And yourselves?
(Give YOUR reasoning withOUT criticizing my question OR that I agree.)

I'm NOT a liberal by any means. Nor am I a conservative. I am a young fair-minded, educated female who apparently knows more than many of the oldsters here. I appreciate other viewpoints but NOT when you assume you know it all.
I find it difficult to agree with the "Iraqis" being glad we are there when we are responsible for over 4,000 U.S. troop deaths, not to mention nearly a million Iraqi deaths since Saddam lost power. All I can hope for is that the tables are never ever turned on us. And yet I see it coming.

No, and only a liberal traitor or an islamofascist would say that America's presence in Iraq is making things worse. The Kurdish politician you quote is not saying he wants Americans out of Iraq. He says Americans are responsible for many of the mistakes there and since we are responsible we must stay and help fix the problems. When you liberals say we should leave Iraq that's like saying you should immediately leave after you run a red light and hit another car, because if you weren't there to start with the wreck you caused would not have happened and the wreck will go away as soon as you leave. You liberals never want to accept responsibility, and try to demonize those who have the courage and morality to try to help fix what has been broken.
It was Bill Clinton who instituted a policy saying that regime change in Iraq was needed, and now you liberals condemn Bush for doing what Clinton said should be done. How sick of you. It borders on treason.

Actually it is getting better here. The people of Iraq are actually glad we're here. The folks that we refer to as 'Insurgents' have been hammering the population to death (literally) for decades, and do not want to loose what they had during the Sadaam reign.

We just know about it through current experiences. You see, the average Iraqi I run accross is either a farmer or herder by trade, and has no resistance to aggression by any means, and has been capitulating to those who have financial power and abuse it, while abusing their own people here. Well they're tired of it and want to live a peaceful life now that they see we can resist these jerks.

I mean, people thank us all of the time. You will never see the hospitals, parks, water treatment plants, freshwater supplies, irrigation, schools and safety we provide for them. That would never sell a newspaper. More importantly I see more kids freely playing in the street than before. Why, because their parents know they're safe!

The worst thing that could happen is pull out and leave them high and dry. The Iranian 'Quds' forces are just waiting to see us leave. Literally. That's all I'll say about that for obvious reasons.

rare2findd - You speak as if you are here with me - witnessing everything for yourself as a day in day out experience. If you'd like to wear 100 lbs of body armor and supplies in this heat...c'mon down and show me I'm wrong! Or, continue watching what's available to you on TV.

It's an ugly situation all around.
And it's not just Iraq that has been destablized.
Iran has been able to achieve regional superpower status with the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and they have been using that influence and the $80 barrel of oil to cement their position in the middle east.
They finance Hezbollah in Lebanon and arm Shia militias in Iraq, much like the Saudis have been doing with the Sunni militias.
There are over 2 million Iraqi refugees living in camps in Syria and Jordan. Neither one of these countries has the infrastructure to deal with such an influx of refugees.
Another 2 million have been internally displaced because they have been forced from their homes.
That is a massive humanitarian crisis that has been ignored by the western media.
The whole region has been put in a state of high tension because of the invasion and continued occupation.
The US has unleashed a chain of events that they cannot control.
I have to shake my head at people who see this as a good thing.

If our policy in Iraq was aimed at minimizing the damage we have done, our continued presence might help. But as long as our policy is aimed at furthering our, or Bush's, geopolitical strategies and "victory" our presence is just stirring the pot.
