You'll know. Loss of power, loss and smell of antifreeze. And, if they don't do it right, it will fail prematurely. Or, at least, that's been my experience.

Remove the oil filler cap and if there is a white residue like mayonaise on the inside of it, the gasket is on the way out, the other way, is the car down on power? Or difficult to start and when it runs the tickover is lumpy, if you are unsure ask some one which is a good local garage and take it to them as they will have a tester what will prove it.

Several ways after you start your car do you notice white smoke coming from the exhaust system, open hood, unscrew oil cap, turn it upside down and if has like a milky substance that is another way.

But the best way is take it to a repair shop and have them do what is called a pressure check done on the system. That will tell you were your problem is.

The only sure way to tell is to have a pressure test on the engine cylinders at a garage. It will show if the engine compression is gone or not. It is a test that takes about 20 minutes.

I blew the head gasket off my 82 olds cutlass supreme... The exhaust smoke was very white like clouds and was billowing out of the tailpipe... It was embarassing ! I would have to fill the radiator with water before I left anywhere ! Trust me when it happens you will know !!! Good luck

Low compression in any cylinder (although a garage would have to check that out)
Water in the oil (pull dipstick out and look to see if the oil is white or sludgy)
Oil escaping from the head gasket area.

Sometimes you will see traces of oil on your water coolant.
Open the radiator cap and check (make sure the engine is cold when you do this).
If your radiator don`t have a cap try at the coolant expansion bottle-which is normally made of plastic.

the oil level could rise with water getting in to it
or you mite get white smoke coming from exhaust
it depends where the head gasket leaks

Coolant in the exhaust, with white smoke and perhaps a sweet smell.

Loss of power.

Hard to start.

Low compression in one or more cylinders.

if your car is losing a lot of water and your dipstick and oil cap if it has sludge( milky colour) this is water leaking and mixing with your oil then your head gasket is leaking!.
