Not a smart idea. When you have an illegal registration #, Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage Tool, copies all of your data in your pc including your IP address. If key is not valid, Microsoft, can shut you down 100% or take legal action against you. Plus Microsoft can if they so desire prevent you from installing a valid XP when you do purchase.

Plus you will not be able to obtain any critical updates or WMP, or any other free download.

If you reside in the United States you can purchase a small item, like a mouse and the dealer can sell you XP as an "OEM", and you should only pay about $100.

I am able to obtain "OEM", here in France with a very small purchase. The purchase is well worth the money, rather then have Microsoft on your back.

Presuming you validate online it'll just fail, presuming you have only just installed it in a few days time, up to a moth XP will lock up and you'll be able to do hardly anything with it. UNLESS the illegal copy of XP is cracked. Microsoft have put a lot of security features into new OS's to make sure people don't use illegal copies. If it's asking to be validated then i doubt it has been cracked, and will therefore most likely lock up.

If XP has been running for more than 14 days, it should update without a hitch

It will not be able to validate. You'll probably get the warning prompts and be asked for the product key.
