Ok, we have 2 computers (one is running Vista 32-bit, the other XP Pro) on one cable broadband connection via a router. Both want to run torrent at the same time but without dramatically slowing down other internet programs, mainly internet explorer. We have tried setting download/upload limits in the torrent clients but if both machines are running torrent one machine always seems to get priority over the other and internet browsing becomes impossible. Is there anything that we can do to allow both machines to get fair download speeds and still be able to browse the internet?

We don't necessarily need fast download speeds, just to be able to have both torrent clients running and still be able to browse the internet without it taking 5 minutes just to go to google.

Depending on your router and its firmware, you should be able to enable QoS (Quality of Service), which will allow you to set settings that will allow you to control both bandwidth and which computer gets priority. Go to the manufacturers website and see if you router is compatible and for instruction on how to set it up.

No. You are setting up a river of data and then expecting your router to make fine distinctions between the different packets. The level of control you want is incompatible with the performance you want.
