Lightweight yet powerful 250cc 2-stroke road motorcycles such as the suzuki RGV250, Honda NSR250, Aprilia RS250 or Yamaha TZR250 aren't made anymore? Can someone tell me why this is? Is it something to do with emission laws? Is there technology available to make small capacity two-stroke motorcycle engines burn cleaner, or is it too expensive at present?

The vast American market kind of dictates what is going to be the most profitable and the EPA dictates, by its clean air standards, what's going to be sold. Obviously, two-strokes for street use no longer meet the standards being applied. At the same time, big old farting diesel buses and trucks blow black hydrocarbon gunk all over everything...but then motorcycles are not moving most of the nation's cargo and are easily picked on...go figure...K ;o)

That's the long and short of it.....emissions, aka air standards. And it does even affect those buses and trucks, even off road equipment. By 2010 all diesels must meet air standards which include not only buses and trucks but off road equipment, i.e. mines and construction sites. And this is the complete responsibility of the owner. A cost in the tens of thousands for each piece of equipment. Something that should affect the unemployment as dozens if not hundreds of smaller outfits will have to shut down and lay off their employees when they can't afford to comply.

they never were clean enough and dependable for a road bike, off the road and around town ok. but they were always fowling out the spark plugs with oil mess and they were just not the bike you wanted to cruise on , plus if they did not come with a auto oil injection sys, you had to mix your on oil in with the gas at the pump, twise the money per gal//

They can't pass modern smog tests , cheaply. They don't have very good gas mileage, at least compared to a 4 stroke the same size.

2 stroke engines can be made to produce less hamfull emissions than 4 strokes.
Maybe it's just the fact that they burn oil with the fuel, which depletes the worlds oil supply.
