a better way of asking this question is "how does the sequence of DNA determine the function of proteins". DNA carries the information for the production of proteins. Depending on the sequence of the DNA different proteins can be made. If the DNA sequence mutates it can also affect the function of the protein. Lets say there is a mutation that causes a premature termination of translation then the resulting protein might be non functional. THERE WERE ERRORS IN THE ANSWERS ABOVE: 1. Ribosomes do NOT read DNA. They read mRNA. THe steps of gene expression are: first the DNA is transcribed into mRNA by RNA plymerase. THEN this mRNA is read by ribosomes and translated into proteins.
