Up until about 3 days ago, my window rolled up at a decent speed (its automatic). It rolls down just fine but it won't go up very fast and I'm afraid it will die, it's essential that this particular window works as I need to affix a parking permit on it. Is it the regulator or the motor that's going bad and roughly how much would it cost to replace it?

I would guess at the window motor being weak. If I remember right, the motor for that one is expensive, so figure around $400 (parts and labor) to replace it.

I would have to disagree with the possibility of it being a broken wire. While the wires between the door and body do break sometimes (it's rather uncommon), it would affect both the up and down motion of the motor. There is only 1 power supply wire to the motor, so anything with the wiring that would be affecting it going up would also affect it going down. The switch just controls which way the polarity of the wires is applied, So say it has a blue and brown wire. The switch applies ground to the blue, power to the brown and it goes up; power to the blue, ground to the brown and it goes down.

If it was a wire, it would either not work at all, or work intermittently, or work slowly all the time, not just when going up.

Chances are, since there's an increased load when going up, the extra strain on the motor makes it go slower. This is a gear-tape (aka flexrack) type regulator rather than a scissors type so it doesn't have a helper spring. Even if it did have a helper spring it would still move slower because you're still going against gravity with the weight of the glass.

While it could be simply a lack of lubrication, and it certainly doesn't hurt to check this, I would lean more toward the motor being weak, and have seen that much more than lack of lubrication or broken wires.

If replacing the motor, might go ahead and get a new gear tape for it when you get the motor. Chances are the gear tape is old and more brittle, and might break when changing the motor out. Gear flexrack is part #4467214 for either side, and should cost about $25 at the dealer.

Do this test. When you put the window down, try to prevent it from going down by grabbing the window at the top of the glass. If the window motor gives in you may have a motor problem, if not you may have a binding condition in the up position and may need something other than a motor. The regulator on this model uses a helper spring to aid in the upward movement of the glass so I'm leery of the motor being at fault. When you activate the motor current passes through the same winding in both directions. So if the motor goes down well then it should go up well. You may have a wire that is broken partially in the harness between the body and the door. Remember all the times this door has been opened and closed. Well the wires are only going to take this abuse for just so long and then they start to break. When they do they cannot deliver all the necessary amperage that is needed in the particular circuit. You also may have a switch problem

Check to make sure the window is not cocking to one side when going up. This will make it bind. A lot of the time all it needs is lube in the form of graphite, applied dry or wet. (spray type.) Apply to the window channels on both sides. If it is still working to slow, take off the door panel and lube all mechanical parts you can get to. This usually fixes the problem.

My guess is the motor is weak.Take the door panel off and make sure the regulator and all the mechanical links are lubricated and not binding anywhere or loose, like the window's channel / window belt. Not sure about cost.
