Spain WAS the "first" after the Vikings to discover the new land... but we NOT Spanish Roman Catholic or talk (mainly) Spain cause the English defeated the Spanish Armada.....

Spain had superior ship crafting skills. Spain was learned in building Caravels while England was still floating around in Galleys that weren't ocean worthy, Spain was the first sea worthy European nation to emerge from the Medieval period.

Perhaps it was influenced by the fact that England had not long had the Wars of the Roses, and was also preoccupied with internal matters such as the reformation.
