Not really. I think they mean that God wants the best for all of us.

Yes, it's very strange and I cant explain it.
I cant agree with your conclusion.
I was raised in North Wales, (many moons ago)! My old Gran took great delight in scrubbing me squeaky clean!
As far as I can remember she never went to church at all, never showed any interest in religion, except to ensure I went 3 times every Sunday.
Whenever I protested about this scrubbing routine she would always snap back (in Welsh).
" Keep still, cleanliness is next to Godliness!"
Where ever she got that from I havent a clue, and whatever she meant I dont know.
All it did for me was make me into an atheist , I always associated God with having my ears rodded out with the aid of boiling water!! And an intense dislike of churches and religion.

I think when someone elderly says, "God is good." they are expressing a profound knowledge they have of their experience of "God".
When you've been here awhile, witnessed the atrocities, survived the crisis', experienced heartache and trauma, you being to learn.
God is not to blame for man's inhumanity towards man.
God is in all things. Not everything bad is bad, and not everything good is purely good. Life events form foundations for character.
You have to have some hindsight. And then you begin to understand. With age, God willing, comes wisdom.
And then you can say, "God is good." and know that this is the truth.

Not generally. I feel a sensation of trust and hope emanating from that statement. Although there is always the odd case.

I feel that they are just being politically correct. The church people they usually hang out with are sure to go "Amen!"

No, I think she's just trying to convince herself that life is going to get better. It's a sort of plea.
