There are lots of girls (and boys) called Alex in my area.
My son, whose name is Alex, was in a preschool class with 20 kids and 4 of them were called Alex. (Two Alexanders, an Alexandra and an Alexa.)
I don't think either the boys' or girls' version of the name is super-high on the popularity lists, but when combined, Alex becomes a very common name. I honestly had no idea how common it was when I named our DS Alex.

Alex is better know as a boys name and short for Alexander. But the female form 'Alexandra' can have the nickname Alex as well, or Lex, Lexie
I like Alix for a girl if you don't want the long name Alexandra or Lexie

When girls are named Alex, it's usually a nickname for Alexandra/Alexandria, or Alexa/Alexis. Don't name your girl just Alex, or people will think she's a boy. I like Alexandra or Alexis. Cute!

I like Alex as a girls name. Just Alex though not as a shortened name for Alexandra.

Alex is very unisex, can be used for either gender.
Alex for a girl is usually a nickname from : Alexandra, Alexis

Every Alex I know is a girl.
I like it better as a girls name. It's not too girly and sounds cool.

I believe it is Alexandra for girls and Alexander for boys. It's a well known name for both girls and boys but I wouldn't say it's common.

Well my friends name is alexandra and shes a girl but EVERYONE calls her alex for short. you could also call her alexis
