His last name in German is pronounced VEE-zell. The problem for Americans is that it looks in English like "weasel," a very unflattering name. So they opted for Wee-ZELL. Sort of like what happened a decade or so back when our exploratory rocket neared the planet Uranus, which ever since its discovery had been pronounced your-ANUS. Well, that would never do for squeamish Americans, so we conjured up the pronunciation YOUR-uh-nus. We Americans need to grow up...
