The pencil or the eraser?

Obviously, the pencil came first.
It would be difficult to argue that someone invented an eraser for a pencil that hadn't been invented yet.

However, it depends how you define pencil and how you define eraser.

The pencil was named by the romans, although it was really lead. In the 1500's, a deposit of graphite was found in England which became the first pencil as we know it.

Prior to using rubber, white bread (without crust) was used to erase the mark of graphite pencil and charcoal. This method is still sometimes used by modern charcoal artists.
In 1776, scientist Joseph Priestley noted, "I have seen a substance excellently adapted to the purpose of wiping from paper the mark of black lead pencil."
Also in 1770, Edward Naime, an English engineer, is credited with creating the first rubber eraser.

The Original "pencil" was a piece of coal and it developed into the pencil. They needed a way to correct their mistakes so they invented the eraser after the pencil making this a stupid question

It's got to be the pencil. Otherwise imagine two guys talking.

"Hey, guess what. I've just invented the eraser."

"What for?"

"Uh, I don't know. To erase writing I guess."

"What kind of writing?"

"The kind you do with a ?????"

"Oh you mean a ???????"

"Well I don't know what I mean. so I guess I'll just have to wait until someone invents it."

Six months later, far away. Two other guys

"Hey look I just invented this to write with. I call it a 'pencil'. Problem is that when you've made a mistake you can't erase it."

"Yeah. What you need is to find someone who will invent an 'eraser'."

"Yeah. Wonder where I'll find him?"
