People, people, come on now. The best Punk band AROUND. The Ramone and the Clash havnt been around in quite some time, if they were then i have unfortunatly been missing out.
This is easy, only it's not that easy because punk rock has become an ambigious term that if used under its' most broad context would group together comlpetely different sounding bands. For instance Blink 182 and the Germs could both be considered punk. Even the difference between the Ramones and the Misfits is too great to use a single title that binds them together in the same genre.
Of course, I am biased, completely. But the best punk band AROUND is Rancid. Queens of the Stone Age has always been a punk rock band to me. Stoner metal aint much of a genre and if it is then bands like electric wizard belong their and QOTSA belong with the punks. Also their is a band called Leftover Crack which has recieved some expose and is really good.
Thing is, Its all happening at a grass roots, underground level. So, it is largely inaccesable even to those who would like to pursue it because good punk bands that actualy get signed and then actualy get exposure are few and far between
Oman Rodgiguez said it best, punk rock is not a musical genre, its an ideal. Thelonious Monk is punk rock. Punk rock is an attitude. Its saying hey./ this is what were gonna do, this is the way we're gonna do it, if ya dont like it too bad dont listen

Dear lord, the answers here are atrocious. I'd like to declare that punk is officially dead. My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Green Day? Those bands aren't... oh, F*** it. Call it what you want.
Dead Kennedys, The Ramones, Flipper, Nomeansno, Crass are my favorite "punk bands," but if My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and those other bands are punk, then I'm lost as to what genre Dead Kennedys, etc. are in, because they're definitely not in the same genre as those Emo ****ing bands.

Social Distortion (cowpunk era)
It was basic, punk-n-roll that didn;t worry about the politics which causes too much conflict. They were the 80s'/90s answer to greasers, and they knew how to make country cool which is nearly impossible to some people. Johnny Cash meets the Ramones.

It depends, you have different time zones of punk... There is the old stuff like The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols. Then, you have Bad Religion and Anti-Flag. As far as the new stuff goes, I would say Rancid.

Misfits because they influence so many bands. Without Misfits we wouldn't have Sum 41, Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Etc..
