your body repairs itself at a higher rate as you sleep. You also use energy through breathing, blood circulating as you sleep, REM sleep, heightened brain activity, some people talk in their sleep and aren't paralysized during sleep and act out their dreams, sleep walk, but you're also digesting food. It sure seems like your body speeds up at night (not a fact btw just a comment). This doesn't include people with RLS, nervous system problems - I have RLS and a nervous system problem, I look like I'm having mini seizures all night long. That's just an example. There's lots of stuff the body does all day, repairing cells making new ones, repairing and rejuvenating muscles (I saw a childrens video of how the body keeps the muscles from atrophying at night, it's like a bunch of people go down there and massage them, the real function is sending firing nerve's to the area or something similar, but it keeps us from getting up in the middle of the night, or the morning and falling flat on our faces! and all the muscles have this going on supposedly. I found that really interesting myself - just a video I remember as a kid).

When you are asleep your body still continues to function. Your lungs continue to expand and contract allowing you to breathe, your heart continues to circulate your blood around your body and so forth. Also some studies seem to point to your brain being highly active while you are asleep. All of those firing of electrical impulses require energy.

These are just a few of the contributers to how your body expends energy while you are sleeping.
