Why was the movie Water World such a flop by movie critics and the like? Wha was wrong with the movie?

Saw the movie on last night, looks like Julia Roberts double played the heroin watching over the little girl. Was that Julia Roberts double?

...if I recall correctly, the contraversial story behind the 'failing' of "Waterworld", wasn't so much what was on the screen, visually or story-wise (I personally enjoyed the film, myself); and yet, according to the financial numbers associated with the reportedly overblown production and financial investment, is WAS what was, or rather wasn't reflected visually on the screen...

...basically, the critics and investors felt that what was presented in the final cut of "Waterworld", in no way reflected the outrageous budget spent on the film, which reportedly grew and grew far beyond what was originally intent to be spent on the film...

...this led to delays in not only completion of the film, but also when the film was ultimately released to the general public...

...there was also a contraversial and juicy sideline story, regarding the persistant and well-publicized aggravated working relationship between Kevin Costner (one of the film's producers and investors), and director Kevin Reynolds...

...this only served to add fuel to the fire, as far as the overlying tension in the film production, as well as supplemented the delays in production, distribution and release of the film...

...all of these problems received most generous and influential media coverage, and as a result, general audiences stayed away from the box office, with regards to this film...

And the bad guy played by Dennis Hopper was really lame.
Movie like that needs a better villain

I liked it too. The actress was Jeanne Tripplehorn. You might remember her from Basic Instinct, where she played the Mike Douglas character's former girlfriend.
