If your sons machine is close to the router, use a cable. If not just get a USB Wifi adapter. The internal ones tend to get blocked by the computer case itself. With a USB you can use an extension cable to position the antenna for best reception.
I have seen these as low as $10-15 bucks a quick search showed this one for $12.99 its 802.11g 54meg

An ethernet cable long enough to reach from your son's desktop to the router. (can't be more than about 185 feet) Or a wireless PCI card (installs inside the machine) or USB wireless device. (plugs into a USB port)

The USB device is easier since you don't have to open the case to install it, but it usually won't work quite as well as the PCI card.

a wireless card. Inexpensive (about 35 bucks) and very easy to install. Simply take off computer cover and insert in an open pci slot.

They also have usb wireless connectors, these simply need to be plugged into a usb port and you are ready to go. They are about 40 bucks.

make sure you have an available pci slot before you buy the card.
