The problem with world hunger is not a lack of food. It is distribution to where it is needed. There is enough arable land, and enough food grown, to feed everyone.
Greed, corruption and wars have ensured that food is wasted, destroyed, rots in warehouses, or otherwise not reaching where it is needed. Wealthy countries are paying their farmers to dump excess food, rather than give it to starving refugees in Africa, who cannot afford to pay for it.
So, in answer to your question - No, genetic engineering will not solve world hunger, because it is not needed when it comes to crop production, it is used to increase profits. It may even make it worse, since farmers in countries who cannot afford to buy the patented, higher yielding, GE crops will go out of business.

Just me being cynical.

Sure, why not. What is the problem of world hunger? When people live in areas that have no arable land or any resources, what do they expect?

If genetic engineering can figure out a way to make food grow in these places, or make these people leave these places, then you might have a solution.

In my opinion there is only one sure-fire way to solve world hunger: reducing the global population. There is only so much arable land on this planet, even if we make plants hardier and more productive using genetic engineering. Already the need for more farmland is destroying the last pieces of pristine nature that still exists while old farmland has to be abandoned as there are no more nutrients left in the ground. If this goes on, eventually there will be nowhere left to expand. We need to stop the population growth and begin to reduce the amount of mouths to feed so that everybody gets enough. This will happen naturally in time if families stop having more than two children.

not really!
there is enough food produced every year for everyone to be satiated but the food is not distributed equally and efficiently due to a number of reasons.
genetic engineering is doing great progress but it is still not reached a stage where one can safely consume them. although most of the DNA is digested by the acids and enzymes but DNA is a very stable molecule. of any small piece of this genetically engineered plant escapes and enters int the gut area it would be disastrous.
the transgenic plants are made by insertion of the desired gene attached to antibiotic resistance. the antibiotic resistance is necessary inorder to selet the transgenic. now imagine if this antibiotic resistant gene escapes thru the gut u will have so many microorganisms that can take up this gene and gain resistance to the antibiotics. so the next time u have an infection any amount of antibiotic will not help u.
so although genetic engineering is a potential for the future there is still a lot of time before it can be used for solving the problem of hunger.

yes it will contribute to solve the problem of world hunger! the main aim of genetic engineering is to produce more with little input! reducing the costs and having greater yield will definitely reduce world hunger but it alone can't fight hunger!We need an integrated efforts at all levels so that correct things reach correct hands and the needy get their share!
