Biographical Sketch of
AUDIE LEON MURPHY
June 20, 1924 - May 28, 1971
Audie Leon Murphy, son of poor Texas sharecroppers, rose to national fame as the most decorated U.S. combat soldier of World War II.
Among his 33 awards and decorations was the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery that can be given to any individual in the United States of America, for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."
He also received every decoration for valor that his country had to offer, some of them more than once, including 5 decorations by France and Belgium.
After the war, struggling and becoming disillusioned from lack of work while sleeping in a local gymnasium, he finally received token acting parts in his first two films.
His first starring role came in a 1949 released film by Allied Artists called, Bad Boy. In 1950 Murphy eventually got a contract with Universal-International (later called Universal) where he starred in 26 films, 23 of them westerns over the next 15 years.

Audie Murphy was America's most decorated WWII soldier. When he was discharged he became a film actor making many fine films, usually westerns or war films. He had very good looks and was so popular because of his war record. I used to enjoy seeing his films when I was younger in the 1950's/60's. Sadly he was killed in 1971. See below. If you ever get chance see his biggest film 'To Hell and Back' which was loosly based on his life story.
Audie Leon Murphy (June 20, 1924 – May 28, 1971) was an American soldier in World War II, and later became a famous actor, in 44 American films, plus a songwriter. In 27 months of combat action, Murphy became the most decorated United States combat soldier of World War II.He received the Medal of Honor, the U.S. military's highest award for valour, along with 32 additional U.S. medals, five from France, and one from Belgium.
Murphy had a successful movie career, including the extremely popular To Hell and Back (1955), based on his memoir of the same name (1949), also starring in 33 Hollywood Westerns. Audie Murphy died in a plane crash in 1971 and was interred, with full military honors, in Arlington National Cemetery (his is the 2nd most-visited gravesite, after JFK).

WWII medal of honour winner, who established a movie career in Hollywood afterwards. He got his medal by covering a retreat from a burning tank. He was apparently so small they use to have to dig a trench in the movie so the female lead to walk beside him, so as not to show how small he was
