Yes. Most abortions are done vaginally, where surgery is required. Early abortions with the "morning after" Pill or RU24, do not require surgery, but are like a really bad period.

If they are giving you the option of local then I would go for that. There are a LOT of risks in going under a general anesthesia - not waking up for one - that it's pretty much always a good idea to do a local if you can. It's not a matter of pain tolerance because you really won't feel anything, and if you do you must speak up because it means it's not working correctly (and they can change that). Most of the time even when you are under a local you barely remember the surgery because of the painkillers they give you anyway. I know it sounds scary, but it really is better to not go general.

To the best of my knowledge most abortions are not done under anaesthesia at all. If a patient is very stressed or nervous sometimes they are given something that has a relaxing/sedating effect, but I dont think that is a full sleep.
Someone else may know of something different.
Also most abortions are performed vaginally arent they?

yes only when the baby is big say after 28 weeks in some conditions they open the abdomen and take the baby out if other measures fail
