U.S. Most common - .30-06 for the M-1 Garand was a rimless cartridge that held a 150-grain spitzer, flat-base cupronickel jacketed bullet with 2700 fps muzzle velocity.
British Most Common - .303" for the Enfield was a rimmed cartridge that held 174-grain spitzer, cupronickel jacketed bullet with 270 fps muzzle velocity
German Most common - 8mm for the Mauser-98 was actually 7.92mm x 57mm. Germany never stopped development on cartridges throughout WW2. They maxed out at 2493 fps muzzle velocity that yielded a round that was accurate out to 800m, remarkable for a standard issue rifle and cartridge.
Japan most common - 7.7 mm for the Arisaka 99. Ballistics were almost identical to the Enfield .303. Please note that the older 6.5mm was supposed to be replaced by the 7.7mm but supply availability forced the use of both throughout WW2.

Copper then as now which is why copper prices go up during war time ever since man/woamn had gone to war the choice for war had been copper. Iron swords are more durabkle but a copper dagger goes in clean and copper tipped arrows likewise..
