You can see San Francisco using the metro system there, but the Bay Area Rapid Transit only goes as far south as San Jose. It is possible to take a bus between the cities however to get to Monterey. I the LA area you can travel between LA and Santa Barbara using the local metro system. A bus Can be taken to Flagstaff, but to see the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, ZIon you would have to get tour buses. You can also travel from either LA or Flagstaff to Las Vegas by bus.

A car would be a lot easier and faster, however.

Have a great trip!

The biggest problem is that I don't think Greyhound will take you on a tour of the Grand Canyon. They may take you near there, but if that is all you are going to get, you may as well fly over in a commercial jet. You might see more. I have no idea what "Mass Transit" is like in Flagstaff, given it's size, I would hazard to guess it is pretty bad. Phoenix "Mass Transit" is a joke. I know that for a fact. I live here. The Phoenix bus system is the worst I have ever seen. To give you an idea, imagine 118 degrees, 90% humidity, no air conditioning, 100 people on a bus designed for 75, and the windows don't open. It's true. I rode the bus here for 12 years. It's not fun. I avoid the bus during the summers here.

So unless you plan to at least rent a car while in your cities you want to visit, it might be more hassle than it is worth.

Rent a car. You will save your sanity.

you might want to look into Amtrak instead of Greyhound
as Greyhound has had a lot of major problems and very full
buses and their customer service is the pits,
some of the problems Greyhound is having their bus catch fire (happen several times) first bus fills they might send a 2nd bus or they might not (if they do it might not even be a greyhound)
their buses restrooms have overflowed
You might want to look into Amtrak (which incidentally does
have connections to the Grand Canyon (via the Grand canyon railroad
you will be more lot more comfy on a Amtrak train then greyhound

The bus is a miserable way to travel in the US. You will be extremely uncomfortable and won't be able to see much. Rent a car! It won't cost that much more and you will have a much better trip. You can decide what you want to see and do, not the bus driver. You can plan your trip around what you want to see, not just where the buses go.

yes you can take a bus wherever you want to go - but the united states of america is geared to car travel - so you'd be better off renting a car.
