If your laptop has not been defragged for a long time (many weeks) then, depending upon the size if the drive and the extent of fragmentation, it may take a while.
Since a laptop drive is always slower than a desktop drive, it will take more time to finish defragging.
If you have less than 20% free space on the drive, then defrag will take longer.
If you are using the windows XP defragmenter, then it is quite slow and can take a while to finish the job. This is not unusual. Also, you cannot use the laptop while it is defragging, otherwise the defragger will reset itself every time, and it will take even longer. The windows defragger does not defrag system files either. It also cannot defrag more than one drive at the same time*.
(*however, this is not important in your case since it is a laptop with a single physical drive)
If you are using Vista, then the defragger is automatic, by default. This is a good thing in theory since it means that fragmentation will be monitored in the background constantly and neutralized as necessary, efficiently and silently without user intervention. This is much better than a manual or scheduled defrag that can be a waste of the user's time. Unfortunately, while good in theory, Microsoft's Vista defragger is pretty lousy in implementation. There are far better automatic defraggers out there, but they are not necessarily free.
I strongly suggest that you do a diskcleanup with Ccleaner before a defrag so that junk files, temp files and the browser cache is deleted. This will leave more space on the drive and finish the defrag faster.

Could be that your hard drive is too full, defrag needs something like 15% free space to operate. Also, do you have anything that starts automatically? That's been known to confuse defrag and make it keep restarting - screen saver's a favourite.

What defrag program.
What operating system.
How long since last defrag?
Assuming you are using the regular windows one and are using Windows, its not the most efficient defragmenter. Find link below to efficient one.
Try to defrag after any large install or deletions occur. Especially IMMEDIATELY after getting your system reformatted, as the installation makes a mess of your hard drive.

did you run a scan-disk first?
there may be a problem picking up and putting down pieces of data.
cancel the defrag, run a thorough scan-disk with automatically fix errors and scan for bad sectors options ticked [you will need to reboot] then when that finishes run defrag again expect to be without PC for another 24 hrs though!

Hm, there have been cases of it taking that long, its not good either way. If you normally keep it tidy then its probably frozen but if its the first defrag for years then it may just be taking ages because its so messy.

Sounds like a HD problem
Run a disk checker routine with a full serface check and auto correct errors and delet crossl inked files set to on. If that says the HD is OK try deleting any Temp files and copy as many files as posible from the "My Documents" Directory that you do not use to CD and then delet them from the HD.
